Doc-001  Grant Johnson.  Autograph document, Ft.
Smith Arkansas, June 26, 1895.  Voucher for expenses.
Grant Johnson, the second most important African-American deputy U.S. Marshall in the
Indian Territory (Burton, Black Red and Deadly).  Johnson worked with Bass Reeves on
several occasions.  He was in several shoot outs and gun battles including one with the
notorious outlaw, Jake Stanley.  He was also stabbed in the neck in a fight with an outlaw.
In my opinion, Johnson is every bit as important as Bass Reeves and highly under -
recognized.
